Weekly Photo Challenge 2017: Project 52

Happy New Year! It is time to put together a list of weekly photo challenges for this year. I enjoyed the challenge so much last year that I am really excited to start all over again. This time around I made a list that I can go through in order. I assigned a specific topic for each week, weeks 1 through 52.  My hope is that it will be easier to start taking pictures each week since the decision of what to focus on will already be made. (Last year I had a group of 52 topics and each week I would choose which one to do. It was easy to…

    Pillow Talk

Who doesn’t love a pretty accent pillow? Currently, I have a variety of patterned pillows in my living room. Some of them I created by hand, a few were gifts, and others were purchased. My eclectic mix of pillows are colorful and really brighten the room.  I use similar colors to pull the room together, like cream and shades of blue, but I also include a few that have many bright colors just for fun.     It feels like a whole room makeover when all I do is just change the pillows and add in a different textured throw blanket.   A few of my pillows have zippers that make changing…

    Phone Cover

Here are a few ideas for custom phone and mp3 covers. My favorite one is a neoprene cover with a sleeve made out of plastic coated fabric. The sleeve slides off so that I can make other covers and reuse the neoprene part. Make your own custom phone cover To make your own custom cover start by measuring your device. Cut out your fabric 1 inch wider than your phone or mp3 player that way you will have a 1/2″ seam allowance on each side. For the length you need, figure out how much you need to add to the top to turn under for a nice finished edge. Also…

    Cooking Challenge

A cooking challenge is a fun idea that can inspire you to learn new recipes and discover foods and flavors that you have not tried before. Besides eating yummy food you get to improve your cooking skills, increase your knowledge of all things kitchen related, and perhaps experience important parts of other cultures. Monthly Cooking Challenge Depending on your time commitment, you can ease your way into learning new things by going with a monthly cooking challenge. Find a new recipe to try one night every month. Maybe throw in some new cooking techniques that look interesting. Have you ever tried cooking bacon in the oven? Pizza on the grill?…

    Dairy-Free Cheesecake

I love cheesecake so much,  I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I get my hands on one. I found this recipe for Fluffy Pumpkin Cheesecake in a KTA Superstore in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii over a decade ago. It is an easy recipe to use and makes an amazing desert. I have recently tried making a dairy-free version of this cheesecake so that certain family members can enjoy it, too. After using substitutions for the cream cheese and whipped topping, I now have a new favorite non-dairy desert. You may want to try this out for yourself, it really is surprisingly easy and so wonderful to enjoy! **To make a…

    Pop-Up Muffins

There are a few tricks to getting your muffins to really pop-up and look like the ones you see at the bakery or let’s face it…. on Pinterest. Tip #1: Oven temp! Start with a hot oven (425 degrees F) for the first 5 minutes and then turn down the heat for the remaining time (375 degrees F). Tip #2: Fill the cups to the top. Pour the batter into your muffin tin and make sure that you fill the cups all the way to the top. This works for jumbo muffins as well as the standard size muffin tin. Tip #3: Use baking powder. It works like magic. Big beautiful…

Weekly Photo Challenge 2016: Project 52

Sweet SistersYou have probably heard of 365 photography projects where you are challenged to take a photo every day for a year. So far I have attempted this type of project twice and have not made it past 5 months. This year I am trying something different and I am hopeful that I will actually complete this challenge.  Fingers crossed… I have made a list of 52 photo challenges that I want to try this year. Weekly Photo Challenge Actually, I started by brainstorming and thinking about different types of photography, places that I wanted to photograph, and skills that I wanted to learn or improve upon. I also included photo editing skills and…

I Finally Learned How to Drink More Water!

For the past few years I had it in the back of my mind that I should be drinking more water, but I just could not seem to change my habits. Last spring I tried joining a healthy habits support group on-line. Even though I failed at the exercise part of the challenge that I started, I did a fantastic job of getting back into the habit of drinking enough water! What a difference it makes in how I feel! Now that I am drinking plenty of water, I don’t feel as tired mid-afternoon and my lips are not dry and flaky anymore. If you need to get your water intake up, here are some…

    Make Your Own Fairy Garden

Making a fairy garden is so much fun! There are many different ways to make them and you can find supplies that fit your interests. The process is pretty straight forward; choose a container, some plants, add some rocks from outside, and then place your fairy in the scene. This summer, after helping my daughters each make one, I made a fairy garden for myself. (I couldn’t resist the temptation!) I also made one to give as a gift for my grandparents’ wedding anniversary. They were all fun to make and each one turned out to be very special. Start by Choosing a Container For the fairy gardens that I created, I used tin planters, a ceramic bowl, and a…

    Choosing a Bottle of Wine

Trying to choose a bottle of wine to have with a nice dinner can really be a challenge. Fortunately, I have found some ways to make this process less of a chore and a bit more fun. Here are a few general guidelines to follow that can help you find some good wine without spending too much time in the isle. Wine Regions Learn about a few good wine-making areas. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I am lucky to have local vineyards nearby. I like to choose wines from around here when I can find them at a low price. Pinot Noir is a local favorite and my top choice of wine.…
