Phone Cover

Here are a few ideas for custom phone and mp3 covers. My favorite one is a neoprene cover with a sleeve made out of plastic coated fabric. The sleeve slides off so that I can make other covers and reuse the neoprene part.

Make your own custom phone cover

  • To make your own custom cover start by measuring your device.
  • Cut out your fabric 1 inch wider than your phone or mp3 player that way you will have a 1/2″ seam allowance on each side.
  • For the length you need, figure out how much you need to add to the top to turn under for a nice finished edge. Also add 1/2 to the length of your device for the bottom seam.
    • For example: For my cover I needed 3/4″ at the top for the finished edge. So I added 3/4″ +1/2″ to the length of my phone. My fabric measured 1 1/4″ longer than my phone.
  • To create the finished top edge, I turned the top of the fabric down 3/4″ and sewed along the top.
  • Next, I folded the fabric in half vertically, keeping the finished edge at the top.
  • With the cover inside out, I sewed the bottom seam at 1/2.”
  • I sewed up the side with a 1/2″ seam allowance.
  • To get rid of some bulk, I used pinking shears and reduced the amount of fabric outside the seam.

For the neoprene cover, I used a zigzag stitch. To sew the two pieces of neoprene together at the bottom and edge, I used a zigzag stitch over the edge and created an overcast stitch. I had to sew slowly because of the thickness of the two layers and it was just about as much strain as I dare to risk putting on my machine.

I also used a new needle to make sure it was sharp enough. To make the neoprene cover fit a little more tightly, I added zigzag stitches on the left and the right at about 1/4″ from the edge. I added a loop of cotton webbing at the top along the side seam so that I can clip my phone case to my bag. After finishing the neoprene cover, I added a colorful sleeve out of plastic coated fabric. I used a serger to sew it up and you can see the over lock stitches (in black thread) below.

The plastic coated fabric was found in the section of the fabric store with all of the supplies to make diaper-covers. I also tried oilcloth (outdoor table cloth fabric) and denim which both worked very well. Other fabrics that I might want to try using for a cover are felt, fleece, and layers of cotton fabric quilted together.

The thickness of the neoprene at the top keeps my phone in the cover since it fits snugly. However, you may want to add a closure to your cover to keep your phone from slipping out.
